oh, san rafael.

Lately, I've have the travel bug hit me pretty hard. Dreaming of all the places I've never seen and that are out there, just waiting for me to come and meet them. Places like Cuba, Puerto Rico, and my one and only, Paris.  Since travel means, saving money, planning and being absolutely ready, I have to settle for all the daydreaming and wandering that goes on inside my head. My husband and I had his business truck serviced recently (that lead us to being stuck on a bridge) and ended up in a nearby town called San Rafael. Hungry and thirsty we left the mechanic shop searching for the closest haven. We stopped at Pier 15 for a quick break for me, and my husband hesitantly followed me in. Turns out that this joint went down in history for also being a sort of haven for mister Bob Dylan. Go figure. Rumor has it, that Bob sought refuge there on a rainy day, full of self doubt and anger and found all the answers he was looking for there, at Pier 15. That visit led him to stay in the bay area and play with the Grateful Dead.

So out we go from pier 15, on foot, to the next best thing in San Rafael. Walk, walk, walk and once we hit the main drag we stumble upon a place we've been meaning to check out,  a place called sol food. Good puerto rican eats, with a colorful ambiance, fun decor and everything else we were looking for. Thirsty as the mojave desert, I instantly had my eye on their ponche, a mix of limeade and mango tea made there. A sort of arnold palmer but with so much more flavor. It came in a large mason jar that I hoped never ended. I ordered a cubano sandwich, roast pork, ham, mustard, pickles, swiss cheese on french bread. You know, because Cuba(coobah) has been on my mind. My husband had the mofongo, fried green plantain mashed up with fresh garlic and olive oil topped with shrimp. Stuffed and happy, we left to work at a nearby cafe, emails and phone calls later we left San Rafael a little sun drenched and happy.
